Paarl Area News - New De Doorns new bridges opened
This forms part of transport month activities to ensure safety on the roads, SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) spokesperson Wendy Watson said.
"More than 40 percent of people killed on our roads are pedestrians, who are often from the most vulnerable and poor communities.
"This means that every day an average of 16 to 18 people die in vehicular or pedestrian conflicts," she said.
Most road accidents were caused by negligence, but this was not the case in the De Doorns area, where most were due to an unsafe environment.
The project had cost R22-million and the bridges were built between September 2006 and May 2007 as part of the Arrive Alive campaign.
"One bridge is exclusively for pedestrians and the other ensures a safe crossing place for motorised and non-motorised forms of transport," Watson said. - Sapa
