Paarl Area News - Germany wishes SA good luck for 2010
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has wished South Africa every success for the soccer World Cup in 2010.
"Its a unique opportunity to bring billions of people by television to your country," she said in Johannesburg on Friday.
Merkel was inspecting progress in construction of the FNB stadium ahead of the world soccer spectacular.
South Africa's hosting of the tournament was not only hugely important for the game of football but also in creating an awareness of the country and the southern parts of the continent.
"Wherever we can be helpful, we will be helpful," she said.
Merkel handed a German soccer team shirt signed by all the players to 2010 organising committee chief executive officer, Danny Jordaan.
Jordaan, in turn, presented Merkel with a book and two traditional African blankets.
Jordaan extended a warm welcome to Merkel, albeit under grey skies and rainy conditions. - Sapa
