Paarl Area News - Cape opts for energy-saving traffic lights
Cape Town - The City of Cape Town intended to replace the conventional light bulbs in its traffic lights with energy-saving light-emitting diodes (LED's) by 2015, it said on Wednesday.
Its communications directorate said LED's used seven times less electricity than conventional bulbs.
While ordinary light bulbs had to be replaced every three months, LEDs lasted for a minimum of five years.
There are 1 300 traffic light-controlled intersections in the city.
On Monday, the first solar-powered traffic lights in the country were unveiled at an intersection in Lotus River in the city. - Sapa
